The flavour

Charcoal Chicken is herby and roasted with no heat at all; Chicken Chieftain is balanced and aromatic with a soft warmth; Pork-Poultry brings earthy turmeric, a whisper of liquorice from the anise and a mild 4/10 kick; Winki-POP is sweet-smoky with ancho, chipotle and herbs; and the Honey Mango sauce lands fruity, sticky and mild. Nothing in the box will frighten the kids.

How to use the five

• Whole roast chook: Charcoal Chicken, rubbed over and under the skin, then roast or spit until the skin cracks.
• Golden skin: Pork-Poultry — the turmeric is what gives you that deep golden roast colour. Oil the skin first so it grips.
• Wings: dust heavy with Winki-POP, grill hot until the skin blisters, then toss through the Honey Mango sauce off the heat.
• Weeknight anything: Chicken Chieftain on thighs, Marylands, chops or a tray of spuds.
• The golden rule: sauce goes on in the last few minutes, never at the start — sugar burns long before chicken is cooked.

How hot is the Chicken Jockey box? Mild throughout. The Charcoal Chicken has no heat at all, Chicken Chieftain and Winki-POP are gentle, the Honey Mango sauce is sweet, and the spiciest thing in the box is Pork-Poultry at a friendly 4/10 on the back end.
