Everyday Barbecue is the paperback cookbook from Georgia pitmaster Myron Mixon, written with Kelly Alexander, and it shows you how to make proper barbecue any night of the week with whatever grill, smoker or oven you have. Nearly 150 recipes trim the competition-level fuss down to what actually fits around work and family.

Competition chops, weeknight timing

Myron Mixon built his name on the US competition circuit and as a judge on BBQ Pitmasters, where perfect barbecue takes all night. This book flips that on its head. His motto here is simple: barbecue is a simple food, so don't mess it up. The result is a book about shortcuts that still taste like the real thing, and smart ways to use the leftovers.

What's inside

It's built around The Essentials, where Mixon shows how to turn any backyard grill into a smoker, then runs through Burgers and Sandwiches, Smoked and Grilled, Barbecue-Fried, Swimmers (seafood), Drunken Recipes, Barbecue Brunch, salads, sides, desserts and leftovers.

Highlights include Brisket the Easy Way, Ribs the Easy Way and The Only Barbecue Sauce You Need, plus The King Rib sandwich, Myron's Dr Pepper Can Chicken and Barbecue-Fried Baby Backs (smoked first, then fried). Brunch brings Pitmaster's Smoked Eggs Benedict with Pulled Pork Cakes, and the desserts include Chocolate Cake on the Grill.

Who it's for

Home cooks who love barbecue but don't have twelve spare hours on a Tuesday. Beginners will appreciate the easy-way methods, and seasoned smokers will pinch plenty of ideas for leftover brisket and pulled pork.

About Myron Mixon

Myron Mixon was raised in Vienna, Georgia, where his father Jack ran a barbecue business and sold Jack's Old South BBQ Sauce. After his father died in 1996, Myron started competing to sell some sauce and got hooked, going on to become one of the most decorated competition cooks in the US and a judge on BBQ Pitmasters. Co-author Kelly Alexander is a former editor at Food & Wine and Saveur.

The Rub Smuggler's Verdict

Darryl Rubb, The Rub Smuggler

The Smuggler reckons this is the book for people who say they're too busy to barbecue. Myron strips competition cooking down to weeknight size, and his Dr Pepper Can Chicken is the kind of cheeky trick Darryl would run past customs himself. Put it on your shelf and Tuesday dinner gets a whole lot smokier. Back it up with Diva Q's Barbecue for more champion know-how, and BBQ Companion for an Aussie backyard spin. Mop on Blues Hog Original in the last 15 minutes.

🏴‍☠️ Darryl's Secret: Pulled Pork Fried Rice

Monday's leftovers, smuggled into a whole new dinner.

You'll need: 2 cups cold cooked rice, 1½ cups leftover pulled pork, 2 eggs, 3 spring onions, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp BBQ sauce, oil

Do this:

  1. Get a wok or big pan smoking hot with a splash of oil and fry the pork until the edges crisp.
  2. Push it aside, scramble the eggs, then add the rice and toss until hot and slightly toasty.
  3. Season with soy and BBQ sauce, toss through the spring onions and serve straight away.

Why it works: Day-old rice is dry enough to fry rather than steam, and the crisped pork brings smoke into every mouthful.
