Generations of Salt Passion – The Falksalt Story

The Falksalt journey begins in the days just after Napoleon fell, when two young men set out on a bold adventure and opened a small salt shop in the harbour town of Gothenburg, Sweden. From this humble beginning, they shipped salt across the seas to city dwellers and farmers who relied on their sacks of salt for preserving and flavouring food.

Across the North Sea, an 18-year-old named Herman Falk was on his own path of discovery. Leaving Germany for the English coast, he developed a deep passion for salt and rose to become one of the largest exporters in Liverpool, eventually controlling much of Britain’s salt production.

Fate stepped in when the small Gothenburg salt shop began doing business with this powerful English salt producer. The shop remained a family operation for generations, but stood suddenly without heirs – and that’s when the Hansson family took over, continuing the legacy in the same salty spirit.

Their grandfather had shipped large cargoes of salt to Gothenburg on his three-masted ship “The Magpie”, and that spirit of exploration still runs in the family. In 1928, they introduced the first table salt to Sweden: Falk’s Salt. Imported from England at first, the brand was soon fully owned and developed in Sweden, quickly becoming a beloved household name.

Today, the fourth Hansson generation still runs Falksalt from Gothenburg with the same dedication, constantly exploring the world and the sea to create premium sea salt flakes that inspire new kitchen adventures and add flavour to life.
