Peace, Love & Barbecue is a 312-page paperback by Barbecue Hall of Famer Mike Mills of 17th Street Barbecue in Murphysboro, Illinois, and his daughter Amy Mills Tunnicliffe, combining 100 recipes with stories and secrets from the American competition barbecue circuit. It's part cookbook, part memoir and part travelogue, with a foreword by Danny Meyer.

Recipes and tall tales from a legend

Mike Mills was introduced around the circuit simply as The Legend, and he earned it with four world championships and three grand world championships. This book captures that world: the cooks, the contests and the joints worth the drive. It's the barbecue book you read for fun and cook from for keeps.

What's inside

Conversational stories and black-and-white photographs take you behind the scenes of the contest circuit and through the shrines, shacks and joints of American barbecue. You meet Mike's wide circle of friends and fellow pitmasters along the way.

The 100 recipes include Mike's prizewinning cooks, family favourites and contributions from his pitmaster mates, covering barbecued meats and fish, sauces and dry rubs, sides, soups and sweets. Look out for his smoked pork butt and crunchy coleslaw.

Who it's for

Barbecue lovers who enjoy the history and characters as much as the cooking, and pork and rib fans who want competition-proven recipes. The friendly tone makes it easy for beginners to dive in.

The Rub Smuggler's Verdict

Darryl Rubb, The Rub Smuggler

Officer, I've never seen that rib rack before in my life, and with Mike Mills' recipes nobody will believe you either. This is a legend's scrapbook: stories from the contest circuit, the characters and the joints, with prizewinning recipes woven through. The Smuggler loves the black-and-white photos; they make you want to load the car and drive to Murphysboro. Buy it and your ribs will get a whole lot more serious. Pair it with The Little Book of KC BBQ and Fire and Smoke, and rub with Three Little Pigs Memphis Style Rub.

🏴‍☠️ Darryl's Secret: Pulled Pork Fried Rice

Leftover pork, day-old rice and ten minutes. That's dinner sorted.

You'll need: 2 cups leftover pulled pork, 3 cups cold cooked rice, 2 eggs, 3 spring onions, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp of your favourite BBQ sauce, oil

Do this:

  1. Heat a wok or large pan until smoking, add a splash of oil and scramble the eggs, then push them aside.
  2. Add the pork and rice and fry hard for 4–5 minutes until the edges crisp.
  3. Stir through the soy, BBQ sauce and spring onions and serve.

Why it works: Cold rice fries without clumping, and the smoky pork and sweet sauce give it a barbecue twist on a takeaway classic.
