The original recipe came home from World War II in the pocket of a Florida man's memory — great-uncle Joe Zsadany worked it out in his hometown of Hialeah in the 1940s, handed it to exactly one person, his sister Frieda, and three generations on it still hasn't left the family and still isn't written down anywhere you can get at it.
That secret eventually landed with pitmaster Tillman "Lee" Nelson, who bottled it into four proper Florida sauces — built for ribs, brisket, pulled pork, wings and anything else that spends time near smoke.
Grandma's Red carries the founding recipe, sweet and tangy with a clean vinegar snap. Competition Brew is the thick, sweet-savoury glaze built for burnt ends. Chipotle Apple brings sweet-heat for wings and tacos. And Florida Gold is the mustard-based standout that's earned Tillman's the biggest wrap of the lot.
Lee's first sanctioned cook was a first-place brisket finish at the Florida BBQ Association back in 2013. Ten years on, Florida Gold took out the mustard category at the American Royal World Series of Barbecue and posted the highest score of every sauce entered — crowned Best Sauce on the Planet.
Four sauces, bottled out of Coral Springs, Florida, and still running on a wartime family secret. Championship pedigree, backyard manners — rub it down, sauce it up.
