Someone asked me at the last market stall if horseradish cream has gluten in it. Fair question — half the "creamy" condiments on a supermarket shelf are hiding wheat flour as a thickener. Here's what's actually in the jar.

Is horseradish cream gluten free?

Tracklements Strong Horseradish Cream is made from horseradish root, sunflower oil, cream, spirit vinegar, mustard flour, raw cane sugar, sea salt and a sulphite preservative — no wheat, barley or rye anywhere in the ingredient list, so there's no gluten-containing grain in this jar.

It's not dairy-free or allergen-free, though — it contains milk (cream) and mustard, plus sulphites, so it's not the one for a dairy allergy even though it's fine on the gluten front. Always check the physical label on your jar before serving to someone with a diagnosed allergy, since packaging and formulations can change.

What does mustard flour have to do with gluten?

Mustard flour is ground mustard seed, not wheat flour — it's a common thickener and flavour base in English-style condiments like this one, and on its own it's gluten free.
